Humans of Omise: Dirk
How did you first learn about Omise and what made you decide to join us?
I first learnt about Omise while working at MAQE.com back in 2015. And then via the BKK crypto community (OMG!!)
What do you enjoy most about working with Omise?
Diverse international team. And with lots of super smart and open people, I’m continuously encouraged to learn and grow.
How would you describe culture at Omise and what makes it unique?
I think the culture is continuously evolving. It’s very fast paced and you’re given encouragement to explore ideas and make things happen.
What is your most favorite challenge at Omise and how do you handle it?
The best part of my job is the team and helping to continuously strip away their blocks to deploying Omise innovation, products and services. Basically I’m a people person and my core interest is how to enable our people individually and at a team level.
In your 20+ years of work experience, what tips would you share on maintaining balance between career and personal life?
Basically maintaining perspective. Understanding that we’re designing and building internet. We’re not saving lives (doctors and nurses do that). If empathetic (EQ) and goal focused behaviours are routinely applied, then as a team, together we can do awesome things.
What do you like to do when you are not working? Do you have any hobbies?
- Eating & drinking in every single Ari restaurant and cafe
- Exploring BKK’s indie scene - gigs, galleries and markets etc.
- Slowly mastering the Ableton sequencer and making tunes
How did you gain your interest in music production and what did you find interesting about it?
My teen years coincided with London’s early punk scene. And my 30s around UK rave culture. So music, gigging and clubbing culture is kinda in the drinking water in London. DIY music making (and internet culture) from the mid 90s was just an extension of that vibe. Probably all related to self-expression (neanderthals drawing cave pictures etc).
What are your favourite things to do in Thailand and have you ever experienced culture shock here?
Favourite things are exploring BKK’s vibrant indie scene. And hanging out in Chiang Mai. Culture shock was gradual and maybe a getting older thing = becoming more sabei & jai yen (chill & laid back) generally. Don’t sweat the small stuff.
How do you define “success” and what are some important qualities to have in order to be successful in your opinion?
Wow - big question.
For me success is about understanding what makes you happy. Self-knowledge.
Career wise, success for me is being around clever, happy, collaborative, EQ strong people who enjoy getting sh1t done. It’s (generally) never about the money. It’s always about the people.
What risk would you take if you knew you could not fail?
Answering this questionnaire honestly.
We're looking for great people to join our team
